Evidence for widespread glaciation in Arcadia Planitia, Mars

چکیده
Viscous flow features, including lobate debris aprons and lineated valley fill, are common ice-related features found across the mid-latitudes of Mars. These commonly along dichotomy boundary around massifs where snow ice can accumulate to topographic lows during periods higher obliquity. We have identified mapped glacial-related reminiscent fill in lower Arcadia Planitia based on morphology, albedo, thermal infrared reflectance, inertia, subsurface radar reflections. Three sinuous show surface morphologies supporting spectral properties indicative massive buried ice, distinct boundaries, arcuate linear banding, deep reflections, dielectric constants similar water-ice, expanded secondary craters, proximity aprons. interpret be debris-covered glaciers formed obliquity Mars' recent past. appear channelized that once flowed but currently reside a flat-lying region. Although their origin is unclear, we consider an interpretation analogous stagnated terrestrial streams due lack obvious dependence. The abundant evidence widespread near-surface mid-latitude region Mars makes potentially favorable site for future missions high potential situ resource utilization.

متن کاملOrbital evidence for more widespread carbonate-bearing rocks on Mars
Carbonates are key minerals for understanding ancient Martian environments because they are indicators of potentially habitable, neutral-to-alkaline water and may be an important reservoir for paleoatmospheric CO2. Previous remote sensing studies have identified mostly Mg-rich carbonates, both in Martian dust and in a Late Noachian rock unit circumferential to the Isidis basin. Here we report e...
متن کاملMars: Dust Devil Tracks in Hellas Basin and Argyre Planitia
Introduction: Dust devils on Mars could be an important mechanism for delivery of dust into the Martian atmosphere. Suspended dust in the Martian atmosphere is observed to be ~1-2μm in diameter [1,2,3] and calculations of fall-out rate [4,5] imply an ongoing supply of this fine dust to the atmosphere. Laboratory wind tunnel experiments [6,7], however, suggest that entrainment of fine dust into ...

[1] Recent Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA) data have provided a new picture of the Martian northern lowland basin topography and surface roughness. In order to assess detailed topographic structure important in understanding the formation and evolution of the northern lowlands, we have removed regional slopes from the topography to produce a series of maps highlighting the local topographic...
متن کاملBiomarker evidence for photosynthesis during neoproterozoic glaciation.
Laterally extensive black shales were deposited on the São Francisco craton in southeastern Brazil during low-latitude Neoproterozoic glaciation approximately 740 to 700 million years ago. These rocks contain up to 3.0 weight % organic carbon, which we interpret as representing the preserved record of abundant marine primary productivity from glacial times. Extractable biomarkers reflect a comp...
